Latarjet Operation for Recurrent Shoulder Dislocation
(Latarjet-Bristow procedure)

What is the Latarjet Operation?

It Latarjet operation is a surgical technique intended to improve shoulder joint stability and treat recurrent shoulder dislocations. This treatment works especially well for individuals who have severe bone loss in the glenoid, or shoulder joint socket, which raises the risk of dislocations.

In order to prevent the shoulder from dislocating, a tiny piece of bone from the coracoid process—a bony projection from the shoulder blade—is moved to the front of the glenoid during the treatment. The linked tendons, in addition to the bone transplant, aid in strengthening the shoulder joint and increasing its stability.

Why is the Latarjet Procedure Needed?

The Latarjet operation is typically recommended for patients who suffer from recurrent shoulder dislocations, often due to significant glenoid bone loss or damage to the shoulder’s soft tissues. Some common reasons for recurrent dislocations include:

  • Previous Shoulder Injuries: Patients who have had traumatic shoulder dislocations are more likely to experience ongoing instability, especially if there is damage to the labrum (cartilage) or the glenoid.
  • Glenoid Bone Loss: Each dislocation can cause further erosion of the glenoid bone, reducing the joint’s ability to maintain stability.
  • Failed Non-Surgical Treatments: Patients who have tried physical therapy, bracing, or other non-surgical approaches and continue to experience dislocations are candidates for surgical intervention.
  • Failed previous Surgical Procedures: Some  patients who have undergone previous arthroscopic surgeries, may get repeated dislocations due to failure of previous surgery or significant trauma. In such patients, Latarjet procedure is surer way of re stabilising the shoulder joint.

Symptoms

  • Shoulder pain and weakness, especially after a dislocation event.
  • Sensation of the shoulder “giving out” or slipping out of place with certain movements.
  • Difficulty performing overhead activities.

Recovery Process After the Latarjet Operation

After the Latarjet procedure, patients typically undergo a structured rehabilitation process to ensure a full recovery. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Immobilization: The shoulder will be placed in a sling for the first few weeks to protect the surgical repair and allow the bone graft to heal.
  • Physical Therapy: Physical therapy will begin gradually, focusing on regaining range of motion, strengthening the shoulder muscles, and restoring functional use. Therapy typically begins with passive movements, followed by active exercises as healing progresses.
  • Return to Activity: Most patients can resume light daily activities within a few weeks after surgery. However, a return to full physical activity, including sports, may take several months as the shoulder continues to strengthen and heal.
